The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music

Maria Von Trapp (actress Julie Andrews) from 'The Sound of Music'

This Oscar winning 1965 musical drama is one of my most favorite movies! It was inspired by a real family of Captain Baron Von Trapp, an Austro-Hungarian Navy officer.

Sparrow

The ubiquitous little chirpy thing, the house sparrow has become a rare sight these days. Thanks to all the fast urbanization and factors like cell phone towers, lack of trees and greenery, more concrete, widespread use of pesticides and many others, sparrows are fast becoming extinct. I miss them so much.

'Still I Rise' - A Portrait of Maya Angelou

Tried Derwent Pastel Pencils today. This is a pastel portrait of Maya Angelou, the great American writer and reformer. pastel pencils are far more easier than bar pastels for these provide much control and neatness.

Medium- Pastel pencils on Brustro 160 gsm A5 pastel paper. This paper is not smooth but is slightly dotted in texture which I think, is not very easy to work upon.

Her poem 'Still I Rise' is one of my favorite poems. Read more about Maya Angelou@ Wiki

Wings

'Far and wide my wings I spread
Cutting the untamed winds I fly
Calm is my mind, high is my head,
This whole universe is my sky'

I did this work using masking tape (for this indicative bird). Done in watercolor and Pitt pens on 5*7" watercolor paper.

Fisherman

Done with Camel soft pastel bars. This medium is fun but messy and finished works give a
'blurred' look as sharp lines are not possible unless one is using pastels in pencil form.

'King of Pop' Michael Jackson. I am still a fan of his awesome dance slant! The secret lied in his patented shoes! :)

Buddha in Sky

बुद्धं शरणं गच्छामि/ Buddham Saranam Gacchami / I go to the Buddha for refuge.

Buddha's teachings light up the universe. The word 'Buddha' means 'enlightened one'.

This work is done in mixed media- Pitt pens, white gel pen, watercolor and touch ups with color pencil.

Buddha

This is a rendition of 'Head of the Buddha', a sculpture dating back to 4th-5th century AD which belonged to the frontier region of Gandhara. Ref pic from 'The Story of Art' by E H Gombrich.

All Buddhists follow five moral Precepts that are abstaining from-

1-Harming living things
2-Taking what is not given
3-Sexual misconduct
4-Lying or gossip
5-Taking intoxicating substances

Scenery in Soft Pastels

Tried creating something with Soft Pastels (Chalk Pastels) today and it was such a task!

This medium is not only messy but cumbersome as well.
